About Individual Therapy
Therapy is a highly collaborative relationship. Essentially, we join forces against your problem. You know what it’s like to be you, and I know something about people, common problems, and how personal change works. Unlike medical procedures, which can be done to you, therapy requires your active participation.
Problems may involve thinking patterns, conflicted emotions, psychological defenses, core beliefs, personality traits, and more. If we are to get to the bottom of your difficulties, we must explore those aspects of your experience that are ordinarily kept private, as well as thoughts and feelings that are sometimes outside of your everyday awareness. This is what sets therapy apart from ordinary conversation.
At the same time, we must not lose sight of the practical realities of your life because personal problems always occur in a context, be it key relationships, a marriage, a family, or a job.
At the beginning of therapy, I tend to do a lot of listening. But as we go, I will have input for you. Indeed, I am generally quite active in sessions. My goal is to help you understand yourself at a deep level. But it’s also to help you identify actions you can take to make your life better.
Human beings have an amazing capacity to grow, learn, and change. But sometimes we need a little help in knowing what to change and how to go about it.
